The Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety, is offering a grant program for law enforcement agencies for a full-time DWI/Traffic Safety Officer. The officer is expected to work peak nights and times when data indicates impaired driving is most likely to occur. While primarily seeking to detect impaired drivers, the DWI officer will also focus on the dangerous driving behaviors of speeding, distracted driving, pedestrian safety, and occupant protection. The purpose of the program is to reduce traffic crashes and the deaths, injuries, and property damage resulting from those crashes. It also aims to improve driver performance through driver awareness and education.
The Police Department currently participates in the DWI/Traffic Safety Officer Grant program, and this grant would be a continuation of that program.
If awarded, the amount of grant funding is projected to be $150,000. Funding is allowed for officer salary, including overtime and fringe while performing duties related to the grant program. Grant awards are limited to $165,000 per award. While a match is not required for the program, it does demonstrate commitment. Match amounts are expected to take the form of vehicle mileage.
