PROCLAMATION OF SEPTEMBER 2026 AS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council proclaim the month of September 2026 as National Preparedness Month in the City of Ontario.
THE FOLLOWING COUNCIL GOALS ARE BEING ACHIEVED:
Maintain the Current High Level of Public Safety
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no direct fiscal impact associated with this action.
BACKGROUND & ANALYSIS:
Since 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has observed September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). The goal of NPM is to build awareness and encourage the community to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools, workplaces, and communities. National Preparedness Month is managed and sponsored by FEMA's Ready.gov campaign. Staff, through the Ready Ontario initiative, provide resources to residents to prepare at home with family and neighbors. National Preparedness Month is an opportunity for all residents and business owners to build preparedness skills to increase resiliency. Residents and businesses can help their families and neighbors prepare by remembering the acronym K.P.I.:
K - Build a Kit.
P - Make a Plan.
I - Stay Informed.
Community members are encouraged to visit www.ReadyOntario.org to learn more and find resources that make these three actions simple and easy. Especially during this month residents and businesses are reminded to register their cell phones with AlertOntario, the City's emergency notification system with steps to enroll also provided on that website.
