This agreement between the UI, UIEC, ENGIE, and the City will allow for the abandonment of existing public water main along the old Davenport St right-of-way between the UI dormitories: Catlett, Stanley, Burge, and Currier to enable the UI to expand chilled water services from the North Campus Parking Ramp.
The UI desires to expand chilled water services from the North Campus Parking Ramp. The area now occupied by the Catlett dormitory was the location of Iowa City’s water treatment facility from 1883 to 2003. Therefore, there are large diameter existing water mains along the former Davenport St right-of-way. These mains conflict with the desired chilled water expansion.
City staff hydraulically tested the public drinking water system response with and without these large mains in service and found no impact. Further, the mains were installed in 1883 and are beyond their useful life.
To facilitate the desired UI project and to eliminate the liability associated with a large diameter water main breaking near high value property, City staff are agreeable to the abandonment of the conflicting water mains in accordance with City standards.
All expenses will be funded by the UI project.
