$399,330.00 available in the Johnson Street Bridge Replacement Project account #S3997 and the annual bridge maintenance and repair capital improvement line item.
The City intends to enter into an Agreement with Foth Infrastructure and Environmental, LLC, of Cedar Rapids, IA, to provide engineering services for the Johnson Street over Ralston Creek Bridge Project. The project generally includes:
• Replacement of the street and adjacent pedestrian bridge on Johnson Street over Ralston Creek with one combined structure
• Undergrounding aerial utilities
• Expansion of storm sewer
• Water main replacement
• Replacement and extension of sidewalks
• Creek channel grading and erosion protection
• Street and driveway pavement replacement
As part of the City’s regular bridge inspection program, the Johnson Street Bridge over Ralston Creek was identified as being in poor condition and needs to be replaced.
Based on this condition, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has identified this bridge as a candidate for a grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Competitive Highway Bridge Program (CHBP). Iowa City has already partnered with the Iowa DOT in the 2026 CHBP application process for a grant to be used for contributing funds to the construction of this Project.
