The City of Iowa City intends on applying to the Department of Natural Resources for $180,000 in funding through the Water Recreation Access Cost Share Grant program. These funds would allow the City to improve its current access to the Iowa River at Waterworks Prairie Park trail head, in addition to four trailer parking stalls. The application supports the City Council's Strategic Plan goal to "Strengthen the Iowa River's role as a signature community amenity and tourism generator."
The grant can cover up to 75% of the project cost. The remainder of the cost must be covered by a local match, which is anticipated to be covered 50% by the City and 50% by the Johnson County Conservation Board. The City expects this to be approximately $30,000 from each entity. Private donors have also indicated an interest in supporting this application, so additional private funding may somewhat reduce City and County contributions.
