SUBJECT:

Discuss Development of a Post-Representation Client Feedback Survey for Public Defense Services

AGENDA SECTION:

REGULAR AGENDA

BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:

The Committee has previously discussed the potential development of a client feedback questionnaire or survey for individuals who have received Public Defender services as a tool to evaluate client experience, satisfaction, and opportunities for improvement.
At the prior discussion, Committee members considered the importance of ensuring that any survey be concise, accessible, and appropriately timed. PDOC members suggested that the survey be distributed following the conclusion of representation, rather than during an active case. The Committee also discussed limiting the survey to a brief format, potentially consisting of approximately six questions, and ensuring that it could be completed within one page (front and back).
This item provides the Committee an opportunity to continue discussion regarding further development of a post-representation feedback tool.
For Committee review and reference, an updated survey is attached. Topics for consideration may include:

  • proposed survey questions;
  • timing and method of distribution;
  • populations included within the survey process;
  • confidentiality considerations;
  • collection and review of responses; and
  • methods for using feedback to improve public defense services.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends that the Committee discuss the proposed survey questions, approaches for implementing a post-representation survey, and provide direction regarding next steps.
