Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15, celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
If it pleases Council, approve the proclamation declaring September 15 - October 15, 2026 as Hispanic Heritage Month.
In 1968, Hispanic Heritage Week was established under President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observance to a 30-day period, from September 15 through October 15. September 15 is significant because it marks the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, followed by Chile on September 18.
