Approval of Fire Prevention Month Proclamation

SUMMARY:

The proposed proclamation recognizes October 2026 as Fire Prevention Month in the City of Coos Bay and supports this year’s focus on preventing lithium-ion battery fires through safe charging habits. It encourages residents to test their smoke alarms, review and practice their home escape plans, and attend the October 7 Fire Prevention Open House at Fire Station 1, starting at 6:00 pm. The proclamation also reinforces the Fire Department’s ongoing public education efforts and the role residents play in preventing fires.

ACTION REQUESTED:

If it pleases Council, approve the proclamation designating October 2026 as National Fire Prevention Month.

BACKGROUND:

Fire Prevention Month is observed each October to raise awareness of fire hazards and encourage steps that protect lives and property. The observance builds on Fire Prevention Week, which commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Fire departments use this annual campaign to share safety information and encourage residents to test smoke alarms, practice home escape plans, and address common fire hazards.

The 2026 National Fire Protection Association theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on safe charging practices for lithium-ion batteries. These batteries power many everyday devices, including phones, laptops, power tools, electric bicycles, and scooters. Damaged batteries and improper charging can cause overheating and fires. This year’s campaign encourages residents to use manufacturer-approved chargers, charge devices on hard, flat surfaces, unplug devices when fully charged, and stop using batteries that show signs of damage or overheating.

Coos Bay Fire & Rescue will host its Fire Prevention Open House on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Fire Station 1, located at 450 Elrod Avenue. The event offers community members an opportunity to meet their firefighters, learn about fire prevention, and discuss steps they can take to make their homes safer.
