The attached proclamation recognizes October 3–11, 2026, as Water Professionals Appreciation Week in the City of Coos Bay, recognizing the essential work of local water, wastewater, stormwater, and public works professionals.
If it pleases Council, approve the proclamation designating October 3-11, 2026 as Water Professionals Appreciation Week.
During the 2026 Regular Session, the Oregon Legislative Assembly adopted House Bill 4005, establishing Water Professionals Appreciation Week as an annual statewide observance. The legislation designates the period beginning on the first Saturday in October and continuing through the following Sunday each year. HB 4005 passed the House on February 10, 2026, and the Senate on February 25, 2026. The Governor signed the legislation on March 5, 2026, and it became effective June 5, 2026.
The Legislature established the observance to recognize the work performed by Oregon's water professionals and to increase public awareness of the water and wastewater industries. The legislation specifically encourages public water and wastewater agencies to provide educational opportunities for their communities and encourages Oregonians to learn more about the industry and consider careers in the field.
The legislation also recognizes the role water professionals play in protecting public health and the environment and in operating, maintaining, and improving the infrastructure necessary to provide reliable water and wastewater services. Water Professionals Appreciation Week will be observed October 3–11 in 2026. The proposed proclamation provides the City of Coos Bay an opportunity to recognize the employees and professionals who perform this essential work locally.
