The Parks Commission will receive additional information from the local pickleball group regarding its proposal to redesignate one of the two tennis courts at Mingus Park for dedicated or primary pickleball use while retaining the other court for tennis. Following discussion at its September 3, 2026, work session, the Commission requested that the group return with additional information.
As of the preparation of this report, staff has not received the requested information. When contacted by staff, the group indicated that it would present the information at the Parks Commission meeting.
If it pleases the Commission, consider the additional information presented by the pickleball group and determine whether the proposal is ready for a recommendation to the City Council or requires further review.
At the August 20, 2026, regular Parks Commission meeting, citizen Bill Davis recommended during public comment that one of the two tennis courts at Mingus Park be converted for pickleball use. The Commission requested that the matter be brought to its September 3, 2026, work session and suggested that Mr. Davis provide staff with a proposal describing how the conversion could be accomplished.
The proposal presented a request that one court be redesignated for dedicated or primary pickleball use. The remaining court would continue to accommodate tennis. The proposal cited growing pickleball participation, limited court availability on the south side of Coos Bay, and the development of a nearby school pickleball club. The proposal also suggested evaluating the courts’ condition and current use, identifying necessary repairs or modifications, and pursuing community fundraising and volunteer support for improvements and equipment.
During the September 3, 2026, work session, the Commission discussed the proposal and requested that the group return with additional information. Staff subsequently contacted the group regarding the requested materials. The group advised that it would present the information at the Parks Commission meeting. Because the information had not been submitted when this report was prepared, staff has not had an opportunity to review it or evaluate its implications for the proposed conversion.
The pickleball group would be responsible for securing all funding necessary for the proposed conversion, including any required court repairs, modifications, and equipment. No City funding is requested through this report. Project costs and the proposed funding approach remain subject to review following the group’s presentation.
