Background/Issues & Analysis

DAS will frequently test those who are under their supervision, for drugs and alcohol, to ensure compliance with their court ordered conditions. Once DAS has collected the specimen, and the in-house lab analyzes the data, they compile drug trends based off of the results. These trends can provide other agencies, such as the Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney's office, and the Courts an insight into what substances may be trending in the community.

For example, in Quarter 2 the key findings were the following:
- Tetrahydrocannabinol (Marijuana) remained the most prevalent drug detected.
- Amphetamine was the second most frequently detected drug.

- Ethyl glucuronide (Alcohol) positivity increased overall during Quarter 2.

- Overall positivity decreased from 2.33% in April to 1.86% in June, while monthly testing volume remained relatively stable throughout the quarter.

For comparison, last calendar year DAS tested 179,198 assays (which equals 18,078 urine specimens). This current calendar year (for both Quarter 1 and Quarter 2), DAS has tested 85,939 assays (which equals 8,769 urine specimens). In Quarter 2 alone, DAS has tested 43,063 assays (which equals 4,521 urine specimens).
