The City Council approved the Election Order via Ordinance #2026-24 on August 4, 2026. The deadline to file for candidacy was August 17th and the deadline for a write-in candidacy was August 21st. One candidate filed for Mayor and one for Councilmember At-Large Position 2, but three candidates filed for Single Member District B and two candidates filed for the unexpired Councilmember At-Large Position 1; therefore, two positions are unopposed.

To cancel an election, the City Council must first receive and accept the Certification of Unopposed Candidates form (or the authority may create its own form) from the authority responsible for preparing the ballot. The cancellation order/ordinance must be adopted in an open meeting. The candidates are not required to be present. Certificates of election should be prepared for each unopposed candidate; however, the certificates of election should not be issued until after Election Day, as follows. Section 2.053 provides that the certificate of election shall be issued “in the same manner and at the same time” as for a candidate elected at an election. Therefore, the candidates, who have been declared “elected” at the meeting ordering the cancellation, must wait until after the official election day (even though no election is held) and no earlier than the prescribed canvassing period (even though no canvass is held) to be sworn in and assume their duties. Candidates may complete the Statement of Elected Officer prior to Election Day. The Statement should be kept locally; it does not need to be sent to the Secretary of State’s Office. Copies of this order/ordinance must be posted on Election Day at each polling place that would have been used had the election not been cancelled.

The following steps will be scheduled as follows:

1) November 3, 2026 - Conduct election for remaining councilmember positions. 
2) November 4, 2026 - Certificates of Election are issued and signed for each unopposed candidate.
3) November 10, 2026 - Canvass period is November 6th through November 17th. Canvass required for SMD B andCouncilmember At-Large Position 1 election.

4) November 17, 2025 - Per the Charter Section 4.06 Taking of Office, each newly elected person to the City Council shall be inducted into office at the next City Council meeting following the canvass of the votes. We will issue the Certificates of Election and the Oath of Office for the unopposed candidates.

The budget for the November 2026 election is $19,000.00. The City is responsible for an administration fee equal to 10% of the City's share of the cost of the election or a minimum of $75.00.
