BACKGROUND:

Cooper Park

This past month, Cooper Park hosted a fall equinox gathering. About 60 neighbors total were in attendance and the CPNA Steering Committee awarded its first "Good Neighbor Award" to two neighbors who support tree restoration in the park through watering. The gathering also included a potluck, crafts, and cider pressing. We also allowed neighbors to bring any materials and talking points related to upcoming local ballot issues. CPNA membership increased by 12 people at this event and our membership currently stands at about 150 individuals. We are still sending out a monthly newsletter to neighbors that includes neighborhood happenings, city events, and ways to get involved. Please see attached photo from our equinox party!

Figgins Addition

1. Bears - Lots of bear activity in the neighborhood. Neighbors who haven’t secured their trash are finding their trash in their yards or, in some cases, the bear drags the trash into another yard. Recently, one bear was either tranquilized and relocated by FWP or euthanized. We don’t know yet.

2. Stadium noise seems to be quieter this year.

3. Someone ripped up a small portion of the field by the trail across from Morning Star Elementary. It doesn’t look like the start of a development because there aren’t any public notice signs but the concern is a very muddy trail when the grass is ripped up. This is a well-traveled path with lots of bikers and walkers.

4. Traffic safety - There has been lots of positive feedback about the traffic calming installation on Arnold and Langhor. The neighbor who volunteered to water the flowers has done an excellent job maintaining them.

A neighbor met with a staffer from the City Streets department to discuss traffic safety issues around the Bootes apartment complex and surrounding areas. There are a lot of visibility issues caused by the cars parked along the road.

5. Jarrett Park - The City Parks staff did a great job fixing up Jarrett Park this summer. It looks lovely and neighbors are very appreciative. The dog poop station is a big hit, as well. We have a neighbor who takes the trash cans to the road on trash pick up day so the truck driver doesn’t have to get out of his truck.

6. The annual Figgins picnic was held on Sunday, September 13. We had about 30-40 people attend.

7. FANA worked with the MSU Off Campus Student Life Office to put together welcome kits for our college student renters. Those will be delivered this coming weekend.

Kirk Park Neighborhood Association

Skatepark Expansion & Shredtober

  • Jason shared SAM’s 10-year citywide skatepark plan, which identifies expansion of Kirk Park as a long-term goal in Phase 3.
  • SAM will host “Shredtober” at Kirk Park on October 3 from 11 AM–6 PM and is currently seeking local sponsors, artists, and vendors.
  • Donations made by October 3 are eligible for a $25,000 matching grant to support new park infrastructure.

Bear Activity

  • Karinne reported bear activity in a Kirk Park neighborhood backyard on the morning of September 3. Matthew shared a PSA encouraging neighbors to secure attractants during the bears’ fall hyperphagia period.
  • Peggy reported that a bear ate seed from a bird feeder on North 24th Street two days earlier and confirmed she is now storing the feeder away.
  • Neighbors are encouraged to reply all with any additional bear sightings so the neighborhood can stay informed.

South Central Association of Neighbors

On Monday, September 28th, the SCAN Steering Committee met to finalize their By-Laws and confirm that on Saturday November 14th, SCAN will hold its Annual Meeting at the Story Mansion from 10am-12pm.  From 9:30-10am that morning, we'll have a "Meet & Greet" social time before the meeting.

Deputy Mayor, Douglas Fischer. will attend from 10am to 10:45am to answer questions related to neighborhood matters that SCAN members may have.

SCAN has also chosen a provider for its member portal and website, thanks to some outstanding work by steering committee member, Jonathan Pytka. After some careful evaluation, "Member Day" was selected to provide platform services and the Steering Committee are now up & running on it.  We are in the process of transferring our SCAN Neighborhood member list to it as well.
