Proposed Resolution No. R26-186- Ratifying the submission of the Florida Department of Transportation's Fiscal Year 2027 Highway Traffic Safety Concept Paper for the Work Zone Safety Initiative, submitted on February 26, 2026, authorizing the City to accept the $25,000 grant, and authorizing the Mayor, City Manager, and Police Chief to execute all future documents associated with the grant, subject to review by the City Attorney's office.

Requested Action:

Staff recommends approval of Proposed Resolution No. R26-186.

Explanation of Request:

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) State Safety Office has selected the City of Boynton Beach to receive $25,000 in federal sub-grant funding for the 2026-2027 funding cycle under the Work Zone Safety focus area. The funding is allocated to pay officers' overtime to conduct enforcement operations in Work Zone locations within the City of Boynton Beach. Enforcement of Florida’s work zone safety laws will be accompanied by an educational opportunity to provide motorists and the public with information on safe driving practices, work zone awareness, and the importance of protecting roadway workers and other road users. The Police Department has partnered with FDOT on various traffic safety initiatives; however, this will be the first funding cycle in which the City has received dedicated funding for Work Zone Safety enforcement activities.

How will this affect city programs or services?

Preventative work zone enforcement and education activities are intended to reduce traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities occurring in and around roadway work zones. The Boynton Beach Police Department will utilize crash data, traffic data, and information regarding active work zones to identify locations where targeted enforcement may have the greatest safety benefit. Grant-funded officer overtime will be used to conduct focused enforcement operations in designated work zones to address speeding, failure to obey traffic control devices, distracted driving, and other unsafe driving behaviors that place roadway workers and other road users at risk. Enforcement activities will be accompanied by educational opportunities to increase public awareness of work zone safety, encourage driver compliance with posted speed limits and traffic control measures, and promote safe driving practices when traveling through work zones.

Account Line Item and Description:

Grant account numbers and project code will be created.

Fiscal Impact:

Grant funded, no fiscal impact.
